The Children’s House

The Children’s House curriculum is a scientifically, prepared environment, which supports the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of each child between the ages of 3 years and 6 years old.  Montessori multi-age classrooms are organized based on three-year cycles, with each child staying in the same classroom for three years, before moving up to the next level.  Students of different ages and ability levels learn from and alongside each other, with the help of individualized goal-setting and instruction from a certified guide.  The children in this classroom have transitioned from the Toddler House, are independent in toilet use, can eat and drink independently with little mess, can work more autonomously, can sit for a story in a group setting, and are ready for a more academic environment.

The Children’s House classroom areas afforded to the child are Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, and Cultural, which includes Geography & Science. The classroom is organized in a sequential manner ranging in difficulty from concrete to more abstract concepts.

The children in this classroom continue to strengthen speech and language development in both English & Spanish; strengthen both fine and gross motor skills as they explore self, family, and the world in which they live, work on mathematical concepts and strategies, participate in direct observations and manipulation of physical properties in the areas of Life Science, Physical Sciences, Earth Science, and Scientific Reasoning. The development of order, concentration, coordination, and independence begins in the inviting area of Practical Life where children develop further independence in the care of self and the environment and while developing all five senses they prepare for the progression into academic work.  The Sensorial Curriculum area assists in the development of observation and problem solving skills by refining skills that help young children learn how to think, reason, and make distinctions through the senses.  Children in this classroom also participate in outdoor environment learning every day, all day Spanish exposure, gardening, baking/cooking, and circle time through a regular daily routine providing an uninterrupted three hour morning work cycle followed by an afternoon work cycle after lunch and outdoor recess.

The student teacher ratio in this classroom is larger than that of the Toddler House with a low student to teacher ratio of 1 teacher per 8 students.
